At the 2015 Family Reunion at Cedar Point, our families received news that would change their lives forever. They learned that JPMorgan Chase would be dedicating a technology team to develop software to track the academic progress of Foundation students. That The University of Akron’s College of Education would be renamed the LeBron James Family Foundation College of Education. Most importantly, they learned that in conjunction with the Foundation and its partners, The University of Akron would provide Foundation students (who meet a certain set of requirements and graduate from Akron Public Schools) with a tuition and fees scholarship to The University of Akron.
LeBron, The Foundation, and The University of Akron have committed to a long term partnership that will, at the very least, see nine classes of Wheels for Education and Akron I PROMISE Network students attend The University of Akron on a special I PROMISE Scholarship. Thousands of students, who, when they joined our Wheels for Education family in their third-grade year were already well behind their peers, have the opportunity to earn a free, world-class education in their hometown. We are calling our kids to be dreamers, and we are calling them to reach their unlimited potential.
LJFF has announced a pilot for its new Urban Mentorship Program in partnership with the LeBron James Family Foundation College of Education (LJFFCOE). Through this program that will first be implemented exclusively for LJFFs 6th and 7th grade Akron I PROMISE Network students at Litchfield Middle School, LeBrons kids will receive hands-on mentorship and encouragement from a wide-range of The University of Akron’s LJFFCOE students.
Under the direction of UAs Dr. Brad Maguth, students from his Urban Youth Mentorship class will be paired with AIPN students in an effort to provide another layer of learning. More than just math tutoring and help with homework, this program will offer the Foundations AIPN students regular interaction with college students in preparation for their own college careers.
The I PROMISE Institute (IPI) was created to provide resources, research-based interventions, and support to LJFF students on I PROMISE scholarships as they pursue their four-year college degrees on The University of Akron’s campus. Implementation of The IPI also led to the creation of The Bureau that has enlisted leading academics from across the country to help oversee the curriculum and guide the I PROMISE Institute’s interventions.
The LeBron James Family Foundation (LJFF) announced it has established the I PROMISE Institute (IPI) on The University of Akron (UA) campus as a resource for its students who earn the guaranteed four-year tuition and general service fees scholarship to The University. The I PROMISE Institute will be located in a currently undeveloped space on the south end of level 3 in InfoCision Stadium and will have a team of educators dedicated to researching best practices, implementing academic interventions, and providing around-the-clock support for its students as they navigate college. Humbled & proud to announce the establishment of the LeBron James Family Foundation I PROMISE Institute at The University of Akron. Scholarships weren’t enough. We’re investing our time, talent, and resources every day with our team, partners, and UA to give my kids every opportunity possible for them to be successful. I won’t be satisfied with them just getting to college or tech school. We need them to graduate. This is our home. This is my home. Go back. Invest. Rebuild. Change. That’s our duty. #WeAreFamily #StriveForGreatness #IPROMISEPosted by LeBron James on Wednesday, October 12, 2016
