LAB Elementary Highlight: David Brown

From our first LAB Elementary meeting, fifteen months ago, David has been a strong proponent of our Wheels for Ed program, and a diehard supporter of Akron’s youth.  Whether you had David as a coach, teacher or principal, you would say this comes as no surprise; commitment is his way of life.

David’s commitment to our Akron youth began when, after following in his mother’s footsteps, he graduated from the Ohio State University. Although today he is known by his students as “Principal Brown,” David started his career as a physical education teacher and coach.  David’s diverse coaching career includes successful runs as both a basketball and football coach.  Most notably, he was the football coach for Akron’s North and Kenmore high schools.

While he has hung his whistle up and taken his post as the principal of Bettes Elementary, David keeps a commanding and respectable, coach-like presence in his school. Recently, David’s leadership style was on display as he and nine of his Bettes students and their parents were treated to a field trip to watch LeBron and the Heat play in Cleveland. All throughout the game, he talked basketball with his students, stopping only to lead them in chants or question a call. After a game of “Jump on Principal Brown” to end the night, everyone could see how much his students enjoyed their time with him.

Whether it’s coaching on the football field, running an elementary school, or making curriculum recommendations for the LAB Elementary, David’s commitment is felt through everything he has done. We could not be any more glad to have him on our team!
